Devoted Series Opportunity

Devoted Series Opportunity

As perhaps you already know, we've started a new sermon series called, "Devoted" in our Sunday morning worship services at Mooresville Church of God. The series is based on Acts 2. I will be preaching the 3rd installment (devoted to love) in just a few weeks. I’m amazed at how God is already guiding me in preparing for this sermon.

Last year I tried something once with our student ministry and it went extremely well. I’m going to attempt to do this again with this sermon. I'm gathering examples of what it means to be devoted to loving God and people. I wonder what being devoted to loving God and others means to you. Write me and share your thoughts. It would be great to know if certain scripture passages come to mind when you think about being devoted to love. Who knows, maybe you'll even end up in the sermon (with your permission of course). Don’t worry, I’ll cite my source!

Learning to be devoted,

Pastor Jeremy

"Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us." 1 John 4:7-11

All I can say about these verses is "AMAZING"! We love, because we were first loved! That's a God I want to know and follow!

I've got to say that John's scripture quote has been huge in my recent journey into God's love for me. Particularly "This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins."

For most of my life my heart has felt like a dry well...bone dry and no love to give God or anyone else. How can I love God and others when I don't have any to give? So the question is: How do I prime the well? 1 John 4:10 is the answer. God's love for me is so great, complete and passionate that fills my heart's well to overflowing. I have to admit that I have a few obstructions that are currently limiting the overflow, but I'm working with God to eliminate those too.

Like on of my previous posts said, if people really understood not just that God loves them but HOW he loves them, I think they'd be so compelled to love him in response.

Ortberg's book "Love Beyond Reason" has some fantastic ways of describing God's love for us.
